Songbird è un media player libero ai primi stadi del suo sviluppo, nonostante sia già utilizzabile in tutte le sue funzioni. Songbird è il frutto della combinazione tra un browser web e un jukebox digitale. È un alternativa Open Source a programmi proprietari quali ad esempio iTunes, alla cui interfaccia è parzialmente ispirato.

Songbird è costruito sulla piattaforma XULRunner ideata da Mozilla. Per questo motivo, Songbird è sviluppato e può dunque essere utilizzato su piattaforme Windows, Linux e Mac OS X. Utilizza inoltre il plugin VLC per la riproduzione e SQLite come motore per la libreria multimediale.

NEW FEATURES AND IMPROVEMENTS

* On Demand Fetching of Album Artwork

Songbird can now fetch album artwork from the web at your command. Simply select or right-click a track and choose "Get Album Artwork". You can also select your preferred source of artwork. By default, Songbird will retrieve album art from Last.fm but you can install from other sources such as amazon.com via an add-on.


* MTP Device Support

We fixed many bugs affecting MTP devices on Windows. We've also added the ability to synch authorized Windows Media DRM'ed content to your MTP device. To see if your MTP device is supported, or to report your findings, visit our MTP Device Support page.
Watch Folders
You can choose to watch a folder hierarchy for changes and the content will auto-magically be imported in your library. If a file is removed from the watched folder, the corresponding track will be deleted from your Library.


* Better Sorting

Library sorting supports unicode collation and better handling of leading definite and indefinite articles such as "The" and "a".


* Replay Gain Support (Normalization)

If a track's metadata contains replay gain (including iTunes-specific) information, Songbird will adjust the playback gain appropriately.


* Reduced Installer Packages

We've reduced the installer package size on Mac and Linux by about 45% on each of those platforms.


* Improved Memory Usage/Performance

As part of our project to bring down memory usage in Songbird, we've re-tuned the database to be less greedy with your system's memory. On some memory starved systems, this should actually increase performance, but most users shouldn't notice any difference in searching, sorting, scrolling, filtering, or smart playlists. Users with very large libraries (>100,000 tracks) will see the biggest memory use improvements. If you do find things are more sluggish than you remember, please see Tuning Songbird Memory Usage and try adjusting the page cache size upwards. If you find any problems in these areas, please file a Bugzilla issue against Songbird.


* 7digital MP3 Store Add-on (Beta)

We've partnered with 7digital to bring you the highest quality MP3s (320kbps). You can easily search, purchase, organize and get recommendations directly into Songbird. Just click on the 7digital Music Store node in your Songbird service pane. NOTE: The UK store is fully stocked, but the US and other European stores are still continuing to populate a complete catalog of music. Please file any bugs, issues or suggestions for the 7digital MP3 store specifically in our Bugzilla database.

Lo sto provando da un po e devo dire che mi soddisfa non è molto customizzabile ma ci sono diversi plugin molto interessanti, che rendono il player completo, per me è da provare.

Vincent ti volevo chiedere di rimettere nel mio primo post anche il download alla versione 0.7.0 di Songbird perchè attualmente è quella più avanzata che supporta anche altri tipi di file come .mpc

Volevo chiedere due cose, sto provando Songbird da molto tempo e devo dire che anche se siamo arrivati alla prima versione definitiva questa software ha ancora molti passi da fare, ci sono crash continui del programma e cosa ancora più importante se sono stati fatti passi avanti manca un supporto nella versione 1.0 per i file .mpc.
Mi sembra gridare proprio al basilare un software opensource non può non leggere uno dei pochi formati (di neanche bassa qualità) opensource.
Ora io chiedo a voi ci sono player OpenSource che girino su Vista e che mi diano le stesse features di Songbird (album art, lyrics)?


Ah qualche anima pia che modifichi il primo post aggiornando alla versione uno, però rimanendo lo stesso la versione 0.70.

Non ho capito a cosa serve il primo link e la parola streamer.

Te l'ho detto a me serveno le opzioni che ho segnalato (albumart, lyrics) e non penso che vlc e mplayer possano darmi queste possibilità.

Serviva ad elogiare la qualità di SMPlayer ma poi ci ho preso la mano ed ho iniziato a definire ogni misero lettore come Streamer. Comunque sia, MsZ ha ragione:

Lo chiamo "streamer" perché chiamarlo "lettore" mi sembra un po' un insulto...

Queste parole mi hanno spinto ad utilizzare per la prima volta SMplayer, ma soprattutto ad abbandonare VLC, al quale ero molto affezionato. Da quel momento non ho trovato nessun altro Sw che potesse essere un valido sostituto di MPlayer e relativo Front-End Grafico ^_^.

Programmi open-source di questo genere per Windows non credo ci siano, mi viene in mente solo Amarok, il programma è davvero ottimo in ogni senso... ma per Windows è ancora "sperimentale" e su Vista io non lo proverei.

Potresti cercare tra i programmi FREE..

foobar2000 è un software leggerissimo ma anche modulare, puoi trovare plugin e skin per fare tutte le cose che hai descritto.

Altrimenti rimangono i soliti free/shareware.. da MediaMonkey a Winamp passando per iTunes..
