[NET] How to Identify CGNAT Versus Double NAT?

Hi everyone,

One common issue with eMule is getting a LowID even after configuring port forwarding correctly. Sometimes the problem isn't Windows Firewall or the router settings but the way the internet connection handles NAT.

A useful first step is to compare the WAN IPv4 address shown in your router with the public IPv4 address reported by an external IP checker.

If they don't match, there may be another router upstream or your ISP could be using CGNAT. A WAN address in the 100.64.0.0/10 range is a strong indication of carrier grade NAT.

With double NAT, configuring both routers correctly or using bridge mode may resolve incoming connection problems.

With CGNAT, however, local port forwarding generally won't work because the ISP controls the upstream address translation. You may need to request a public IPv4 address.
